Your Dental Hygiene Services FAQ

A dental hygienist focuses on preventing and treating gum disease and maintaining oral health. This includes professional cleaning, scaling, stain removal, and providing guidance on home care.

Your appointment typically involves a review of your general health and your oral health goals. Removal of plaque and tartar is performed using ultrasonic and hand instruments. Polishing is done to remove surface stains. Sometimes a topical fluoride will be applied.

Fluoride is recommended for those that have a high risk of cavities by rebuilding weakened enamel and making teeth more resistant to acid from bacteria and sugars. Fluoride can slow down or reverse early tooth decay. Fluoride can also help with general sensitivity.

Fluoride used in the dental office is similar to fluoride in toothpaste, but it is much stronger, more concentrated and designed for faster protection. The fluoride applied in the office is a varnish, making it stickier so it adheres to teeth longer and releases fluoride more effectively.

A regular cleaning is preventive care for patients with generally healthy gums.  It involves removal of plaque and tartar from the teeth and a polishing. A deep cleaning is more intensive treatment used when there are signs of gum disease. It involves cleaning deep below the gumline and smoothing the tooth roots to help gums reattach. Deep cleanings are often done with local anaesthtics and may require multiple visits.
